Your best bet is trying to teach yourself it without an eBook. Trust me on this one, being self-taught is a massive asset to you as you continue to advance.
The best place to do a lot of your research is infact
http://www.php.net
. But, a single beginners book shouldnt do any harm just to start you off. Also, have a huge project in mind that you want to create that requires the use of PHP, that way you will have something to aim for and it will motivate your learning. This should hopefully make you actually go out and search up the different functions and use them to the best effect

Ive seen that site before, but wouldnt recommend it for higher level coding. It shows you the complete basics and a few bits more, but everytime ive tried to find something specfic, its never had it.

Live at
www.php.net
for a month or two, that's how I learned. Dead Eye is right about thinking of a large project. You'll find that you need to research lots of different things to achieve your desired effects.

Its most certainly the best way ive found to do things. Infact its exactly how I started, im self-taught and it is so much better. You actually begin to understand not what the functions do, but how they do it. Once you get that behind you, so many ideas sort of like pop into your head, especially in my case.
The reason I even got into PHP is because I used to play on a large multi player browser based game. Its main coding element is PHP, and so like pretty much every players dream, you want to own your own server and your own games for others to play on (did I mention its Open Source and has a large network?). So yeah, with it being a game and futuristic, I just let my mind go wild with ideas and then try to create them
. If I dont know how to do it, I think of what I am trying to do, and then how it could be done and research if there are any functions that will serve my purpose, or if I can indeed create my own function to do it.

How weird, I started off aspiring to code my own webgame too. When I realised how difficult it would be I decided to go with something slightly less complicated and come back to the idea at a later date.

thats what happened with me aswell, i saw all these cool flash games and rpg games and wanted to make one myself so i learned html, thinking it was good enough then i found out how hard it was to make one of those games, so i thought i'd make one at a ater time, yet i havent made one yet, its still to hard for me

it takes minimum a month and a half even the most experience programmers would take minimum a month to get it out of beta

RPG games are the hardest to create in my mind. The site I currently own is not exactly RPG, since you play as yourself. You build up your empire and kill everyone else lol
More of an RTS game apart from the fact it isnt Real-Time lmao. I really need to update my maintenance system so that it is. Though having said that then entire code needs a massive clean up operation. Once done it should run about 2 or 4 times better
As for the amount of time, it takes a hell of a lot longer than a month lol. For the up most experienced, maybe about 2 or 3 months, if I personally got my act together (The fact that my current site is run from adapted Open Source code, and my new project is the inspiration of this created from scratch by myself only) it would take about a year or so. However, being at school (its already been over a year lol) its gonna take me at least another year if not slightly more. This is usually because I dont actually do that much development to it at all, maybe about 2 months out of a year solid programming if it was squashed together. So actually if I did nothing but work on it, it would infact take me about a year or so from start to finish

I'm always happy to pretend I know what i'm doing as far as coding/programming goes!
But as far as games go, any good online game takes a lifetime to develop. The best ones are continually updated and maintained, so you could say development takes an infinite amount of time. I know at least that the game I had in mind was very complex and would have taken years to perfect.

Yeah your right there. This games is continuely developed by a large community.
However, I was oin about a year or two for actually coding the basics and getting it to a state where it is playable with all original concepts and ideas coded and reasonably working
